Endometriosis

Overview

Endometriosis is a chronic disorder in which the tissue that resembles uterine lining develops outside the uterus. This misplaced tissue acts as a normal lining. It becomes thick, fissured and bleeding each cycle. But it has no means of coming out of the body. This causes inflammation, pain, and occasionally scar tissue. Most women initially mistake it with normal period pain. With time, the symptoms can be severe and impact life. Endometriosis pain may be mild discomfort or cramps. In other instances, it influences fertility and well being.

What is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a condition where endometrial-like tissue develops in other regions such as ovaries, fallopian tubes and the lining of the pelvis. There are rare cases when it may extend outside the pelvic area. At the end stage, e.g. stage 4 endometriosis or fourth stage endometriosis, the disease is severe. Deep implants and large cysts may develop. Scar tissue can cause the sticking of organs. There are some uncommon forms: thoracic endometriosis, in which the tissue involves the lungs. It may result in pains of the chest during menstruation.

Types of Endometriosis
